US Teen Charged With Killing Parents For Money To Assassinate Trump

A Wisconsin teenager charged in the deaths of his parents faces wider allegations that he killed them to "obtain the financial means" to assassinate President Donald Trump and overthrow the government, according to a recently unsealed federal warrant.

Nikita Casap, 17, was charged last month by Waukesha County authorities with first-degree murder, theft and other crimes in the deaths of his mother, Tatiana Casap, and his stepfather, Donald Mayer. Authorities allege the teenager fatally shot them at their home outside Milwaukee in February and lived with the decomposing bodies for weeks before fleeing with $14,000 cash, passports and the family dog. He was arrested last month in Kansas.

Casap, in custody at the Waukesha County jail on a $1 million bond, is due in court next month to enter a plea. County prosecutors have offered a glimpse of the federal allegations, which were outlined in an FBI warrant unsealed Friday.

Federal authorities accuse Casap of planning his parents' murders, buying a drone and explosives, and sharing his plans with others, including a Russian speaker. His intentions are detailed in a three-page antisemitic manifesto praising Adolf Hitler. The warrant filed at the federal court in Milwaukee also contains excerpts of communications on TikTok and the Telegram messenger app.

"Casap appears to have written a manifest calling for the assassination of the President of the United States. He was in touch with other parties about his plan to kill the President and overthrow the government of the United States," the search warrant says. "The killing of his parents appeared to be an effort to obtain the financial means and autonomy necessary to carrying out his plan."

In court, prosecutors alleged Casap was in touch with a person who speaks Russian and shared a plan to flee to Ukraine. Authorities found him in Kansas with money, passports, a car and the family's dog.

Federal prosecutors alleged Casap's manifesto outlined his reasons for wanting to kill Trump and included ideas about how he would live in Ukraine.

Citing Casap's writings, the federal warrant said the teenager wanted to spur governmental collapse by "by getting rid of the president and perhaps the vice president."

Phone and online messages seeking comment were left Sunday for Casap's public defender, Nicole Ostrowski. In court last month, she moved to dismiss some of the charges against her client, including theft, arguing that prosecutors had not laid out their case. She's also noted her client's age during court proceedings.

"He is young, he is still in high school," she said on March 12.

County authorities also charged Casap with hiding a corpse, theft and misappropriating identification to obtain money.

Officers found the bodies of Tatiana Casap, 35; and Mayer, 51, on Feb. 28. Family members requested a well-being check after Mayer didn't report for work and Nikita Casap skipped school for about two weeks.

Authorities believe the parents were killed weeks earlier. Prosecutors said in court that the couple's bodies were so badly decomposed that they had to be identified through dental records.

"Crosses Any Line Of Decency": US Officials Slam Russia Over Ukraine Attack

Top US officials on Sunday condemned a Russian missile strike in the center of Ukraine's city of Sumy, which killed and wounded dozens of people.

The US special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said the attack by Russian forces on "civilian targets" in the northeastern city "crosses any line of decency."

"As a former military leader, I understand targeting and this is wrong," the retired lieutenant general posted on X, adding that "there are scores of civilian dead and wounded."

The Russian missile strike on Sunday morning killed at least 34 people, Kyiv said, making it one of the deadliest attacks in months. Nearly 120 people were also wounded.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X that the United States "extends our deepest condolences to the victims of today's horrifying Russian missile attack on Sumy."

"This is a tragic reminder of why President Trump and his Administration are putting so much time and effort into trying to end this war and achieve durable peace," Rubio said.

Trump has been pressing Moscow and Kyiv to agree to a ceasefire deal but has failed to extract any major concessions from the Kremlin, despite repeated negotiations between Russian and US officials.

Cops Dressed As Batman, Robin Nab Gambling Suspects In UK, Video Goes Viral

Two Metropolitan police officers dressed as Batman and Robin have gone viral after they turned up at the Westminster Bridge to serve justice. Inspector Darren Watson and Police Constable Abdi Osman donned the superhero outfits to tackle an illegal gambling racket at the popular tourist spot where visitors are often duped.

As per the Met police, the illegal gambling gangs target tourists with games known as the 'three cups challenge' or 'shell game'. However, since most of these individuals knew the officers, owing to repeated offences, Mr Watson had to come up with a creative idea to deliver 'vengeance'.

"We know that two repeat offenders have been operating on Westminster Bridge and have come to recognise me and my team from our patrols," said Mr Watson.

"I knew that if we were going to catch them we would have the think outside the box, and then I remembered that I had Batman and Robin costumes to hand which could come in use," he added.

On February 15, the duo donned their respective outfits and made a dash for the criminals and managed to arrest Eugen Stoci and Constica-Gherorghe Barbu for providing the facilities to gamble. While Barbu was convicted at Croydon Magistrates' Court and fined Rs 1.03 lakh (925 pounds), Stocia was convicted in absence at Westminster Magistrates' Court. A warrant is out for his arrest.

Watch: Cops Dressed As Power Rangers Arrest Thief During Carnival In Sao Paulo

Previous instances

Cops in the UK are not the only ones wearing unique costumes while busting the criminals. Last month, police officers in Brazil's Sao Paulo arrested a suspected thief in the middle of a carnival while dressed as Power Rangers. Footage shared on social media showed the red, blue, yellow, and green Power Rangers, wearing body-hugging colourful lycra costumes, monitoring the carnival while paying homage to the 1990-era show.

"It's morphin' time!" wrote Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio Gomes de Freitas on X (formerly Twitter), adding: "The Power Rangers of our Civil Police are putting on another show this carnival! Always vigilant, our heroes noticed the suspicious behavior of a duo within the crowd and with an approach no ranger could fault, they arrested the criminal and recovered seven cell phones in one go."

Similarly, in Peru's capital Lima, a police officer conducted a drug raid while wearing a capybara costume where he recovered 1,700 packages of cocaine and marijuana.

Gaza "Hell Of Earth", Says Red Cross, Warns Of "Dangerous Situation"

The president of the Red Cross described the humanitarian situation in Gaza on Friday as "hell on earth" and warned that its field hospital will run out of supplies within two weeks.

"We are now finding ourselves in a situation that I have to describe as hell on earth ...People don't have access to water, electricity, food, in many parts," Mirjana Spoljaric told Reuters at the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva.

No new humanitarian supplies have entered the Palestinian enclave since Israel blocked the entry of aid trucks on March 2, as talks stalled on the next stage of a now broken truce. Israel resumed its military assault on March 18.

Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said 25,000 aid trucks had entered Gaza in the 42 days of the ceasefire and that Hamas had used the aid to rebuild its war machine, an allegation which the group has denied.

Spoljaric said supplies were running critically low.

"For six weeks, nothing has come in, so we will, in a couple of weeks' time, run out of supplies that we need to keep the hospital going," she said.

The World Health Organization said supplies of antibiotics and blood bags were dwindling fast. Twenty-two out of 36 hospitals in the enclave are only minimally functional, Dr. Rik Peeperkorn told reporters in Geneva via video link in Jerusalem.

The Red Cross president also raised concern about the safety of humanitarian operations.

"It is extremely dangerous for the population to move, but it's especially also dangerous for us to operate," Spoljaric said.

In March, the bodies of 15 emergency and aid workers, including eight members of the Palestinian Red Crescent, were found buried in a mass grave in southern Gaza.

The U.N. and Red Crescent accused Israeli forces of killing them.

The Israeli military said on Monday that an initial investigation showed that the incident occurred "due to a sense of threat" after it said it had identified six Hamas militants in the vicinity.

Spoljaric called for an immediate ceasefire in order to release the remaining hostages held by Hamas and to address grave humanitarian issues in Gaza.

Israel began its military campaign in Gaza in October 2023 after Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people and took some 250 hostages on a raid into Israel, according to Israeli tallies.

Since then, more than 50,800 Palestinians have been killed and much of the territory has been reduced to rubble.

EY Slapped With Nearly 5-Million-Pound Penalty Over Thomas Cook Audits

UK auditors Ernst & Young were Thursday hit with a £4.9 million fine (6.3 million euros) for "serious breaches" in its audits of collapsed travel firm Thomas Cook.

The UK watchdog, the Financial Reporting Council, slapped the fine on the company while one of its partners Richard Wilson, who was in charge of the 2017 and 2018 audits, was fined £105,000.

Debt-plagued Thomas Cook, which struggled against fierce online competition for years and blamed Brexit uncertainty for a drop in bookings, abruptly declared bankruptcy in September 2019 after failing to secure £250 million from private investors.

The failure of the 178-year-old doyen of the travel industry followed a lengthy period of chronic financial turmoil after a disastrous series of mergers left it burdened with soaring debt, a large branch network and high costs.

Its sudden demise led to 22,000 job losses worldwide and forced the UK government to embark upon the nation's biggest repatriation effort since World War II to fly home about 150,000 Britons.

Many disappointed holiday-makers struggled to be reimbursed.

"Both audits failed in their principal objective: that of obtaining reasonable assurance that the financial statements were free from material misstatement," the watchdog said in a statement.

It noted that "the deficiencies" in the 2018 audit "were particularly serious" given Thomas Cook's "deterioration in performance compared with expectations".

However, the watchdog stressed that it was "not suggested that the breaches were intentional, dishonest, deliberate or reckless".

In a statement, EY said providing "high-quality audits remains our priority and we deeply regret that the 2017 and 2018 audits of Thomas Cook fell below the standards that we expect".

Chinese conglomerate Fosun bought Thomas Cook in late 2019 for £11 million and relaunched it as an online travel agency the following year.

It was then resold in 2024 to the Polish group eSky.

China Sends Proposal To Australia Amid Bitter Fight With US, Gets Rejected

Australia has declined China's proposal to form an alliance against the United States' tariffs, imposed by President Donald Trump's administration. The decision comes as Washington escalates its trade war with Beijing, imposing a 10 per cent import tax on Australian goods and significantly higher tariffs on Chinese products - 125 per cent.

China's ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, suggested that joint resistance is the only way to counter the US' "hegemonic and bullying behavior." He also said, "The international community... should firmly say no to unilateralism and protectionism."

However, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his country will prioritise its national interests, "speak for ourselves" and not align with China's stance.

Defence Minister Richard Marles emphasised that Australia will not be "holding China's hand" and instead focus on diversifying its trade relationships.

“We're not about to make common cause with China, that's not what's going to happen here. I don't think we'll be holding China's hand,” Marles told Australia's Nine News. “We don't want to see a trade war between America and China, to be clear, but our focus is on actually diversifying our trade," he added.

Australia has expressed frustration over the tariffs but has opted not to retaliate. Instead, the country is seeking further negotiations with the White House. Xiao Qian argued that the US has "weaponised" trade issues, potentially sabotaging the international order and dragging the global economy into chaos. He emphasised the need for Australia and China to cooperate in safeguarding a fair and free trading environment.

Australia is actively exploring alternative export opportunities outside the US. The country aims to reduce its reliance on China and bolster economic resilience by diversifying trade with nations like Indonesia, India, the UK, and the UAE. "Eighty percent of trade does not involve the United States. There are opportunities for Australia and we intend to seize them", Albanese said. Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell has recently met with counterparts from Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and India.

Trump's Gamechanger - 125% Tariff On China, Levies On 75 Others "On Hold"

Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs, which was meant to impose levies against all those who tariff US goods, has taken a fresh turn. It has evolved into a slugfest between China and the United States, with Washington now imposing a massive 125 per cent tax on all Chinese goods.

Announcing this on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump said that while China will have to bear the brunt of 125 per cent tariffs, Washington has put a 90-day pause on the other 75 countries against whom reciprocal tariffs were imposed on April 2.

CHINA PUNISHED, PUT IN THE CORNER

Slamming China for its "lack of respect" shown to world's markets, President Trump intensified his punishing tariffs against the world's second-largest economy. "Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World's Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately," he wrote.

Reiterating his criticism of China for "robbing" and "ripping off" the United States' economy for decades with its punitive tariff structures, unfair trade practices, currency manipulation tactics, and unjustified subsidy norms, President Trump wrote that "At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the USA, and other countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable."

While putting China in the corner, Donald Trump gave respite to the 75 other nations that he had imposed "discounted reciprocal tariffs" on last week, saying that he has ordered an immediate pause on such levies after seeing a humble and proactive approach by these nations in trying to resolve the trade imbalance with the United States.

RESPITE FOR THE OTHERS

Complementing the 75 other nations for "not retaliating in any way" and instead, respecting his suggestions, he wrote, "Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately."

And so, in a move that may well be seen as a softening of his stand, Donald Trump, with the stroke of his pen, changed the entire dynamic of his "Liberation Day" move. Today's move by President Trump also hints at being one to redeem his image across the world, for which he himself was to blame over his vastly unpopular decision, which turned away US allies and made friendly nations revolt by looking for alternatives.

MOVE TO ISOLATE CHINA OVER TARIFFS

Now, President Trump latest pivot has singled out Beijing, and given a clear indication that America has one main adversary - China.

China's Xi Jinping, who has been matching Donald Trump step for step, may find Beijing increasingly isolated. Till Trump's tariffs were acting like a thorn for US allies and other neutral nations, they were gravitating towards China - the second-largest economy and largest exporter of goods. But with Trump's decision to put a "pause" on reciprocal tariffs on most nations, the status-quo is reversed, and they may well gravitate towards America - the largest economy and the oldest democracy.

Within minutes of Donald Trump's announcement today, the US stock markets surged. Wall Street stocks rocketed higher immediately. The S&P 500 surged 6.0 percent higher to 5,281.44, snapping a brutal run of losses since Trump's "Liberation Day" tariff announcement a week ago.

Gujaratis Make Electoral Debut In Canada As Punjabis Seek Re-Election

Gujaratis have emerged as a major bloc, even as Punjabis remain a force to be reckoned with in Canada's political sphere, as immigrants of Indian origin steadily gain ground in the North American country which will hold federal elections later this month.

The Indian diaspora in Canada is vibrant and diverse - from Punjabis and Gujaratis, to Bengalis and Malayalis. While most migrants within the Indian-Canadian community are either students or highly-skilled employees, Gujaratis and Punjabis usually have a business background.

Over the last two decades, Punjabis were the only ones who ventured into the political arena, but come 2025, Gujaratis are making a debut. Brampton in Ontario and Calgary in Alberta, both with a sizeable Indian-Canadian population, have emerged as battleground cities as four Gujarati-origin candidates are contesting for parliamentary seats.

POLITICAL DEBUT

Most of the Gujarati-origin candidates are first-generation immigrants. While Punjabis have a clear advantage in terms of numbers, representation, and a history in Canadian politics - from MPs, to ministers, some as senior as a Cabinet rank, Gujaratis have spent decades at the grassroots, laying the groundwork with an enterprising outlook and community service. They have also significantly gained ground in terms of social leadership.

The four Gujarati-origin Indian-Canadians contesting in Canada's 45th federal election, scheduled on April 28, 2025 are Jayesh Brahmbhatt, Sunjiv Raval, Ashok Patel, and Minesh Patel.

KEY CONTESTANTS - A BRIEF HISTORY

Jayesh Brahmbhatt, contesting the parliamentary election from Brampton Chinguacousy Park, moved from India to Canada in 2001. A civil engineer by profession, Mr Brahmbhatt went on to become a successful real estate developer in Canada. Living in Canada for almost quarter of a century now, he ventured into politics and has been given a ticket by the People's Party.

Speaking to Times of India, he said, "We stand for freedom, responsibility, fairness and respect for all, and somewhere it resonates with me", adding that he is confident of a win in the upcoming polls. "I have spoken to a lot of people, and they seek change from this election," he said.

Acknowledging the rise of the Indian community and regional sub-communities in Canada, Mr Brahmbhatt said, "Political parties in Canada are now identifying Indians as an important community in the political arena, and sub-groups such as Gujaratis are making the most of this opportunity to be represented and be heard."

Sunjiv Raval, another Gujarati-origin Indian-Canadian, is contesting the parliamentary election from Calgary Midnapore. He has been given a ticket by the Liberal Party of Canada. Mr Raval is a successful businessman who owns a chain of stores. Since moving to Calgary more than 20 years ago, he has been actively involved in community work and has represented several Indian community groups.

Acknowledging the cost of living issue much talked about by Canadians, Mr Raval said, "We are fighting on issues faced by the middle class, who have been demanding better infrastructure and sports facilities, affordable housing and work opportunities for all." He added that the other political issue - immigration - requires a balanced approach. "The country needs immigrants, but there must be a balance. We hope to restore it with the right policies. We have a voice now," he said.

The third person of Gujarati descent contesting the Canadian election this month is Ashok Patel. He and Minesh Patel, the fourth Gujarati entering Canadian politics, are contesting as Independent candidates. While Ashok Patel is contesting from Edmonton Sherwood, Minesh Patel has filed his nomination papers from Calgary Skyview. Both are from a business background and are now looking to serve fellow Canadians by becoming lawmakers.

The Conservative Party of Canada had picked a fifth Gujarati as one of their candidates briefly. His name is Don Patel, a successful realtor from Gujarat's Anand. He was considered for a ticket from Etobicoke North, but didn;t make the final cut.

'NOT A SURPRISE'

This marks a massive shift in Indian community representation in Canada. From being dominated by Punjabis, the rise of Gujaratis in Canada's political landscape has led to diversity in representation, thereby giving the Canadian voters a greater choice. Gujaratis are not replacing or competing with Punjabis, but are adding to the Indian community's political base. It is also a welcome move as culturally diverse values will now shape policy.

Speaking to Times of India about the rise of Gujaratis in Canada's politics, Hemant Shah, the Director of International Trade at Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC), said he saw this coming. It isn't a surprise, he added. "Canada is home to more than 1 lakh Gujaratis. The community is present in almost all major cities, but more so in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver. Many came to the country as immigrants whereas many more arrived as students and settled here. I have been in Canada for over four decades now, and in this election, we are perhaps witnessing the highest number of candidates of Gujarati origin. Irrespective of their win, it is a significant step in ensuring representation of the community, which is the second largest after Punjabis," he said.

THE KNOWN TURF

The Punjabi representation in Canadian politics has been known for a while now. Some of prominent names include Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party and the first Sikh leader to head a party in Canada; Anita Anand, who is currently the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry; Kamal Khera, the current Minister of Health; Sukh Dhaliwal, a Liberal Party MP, and Bardish Chagger, the former minister of diversity, inclusion, and youth.

S Jaishankar, Marco Rubio Hold Talks On Bilateral Trade Agreement

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday agreed on the need for early conclusion of the proposed India-US bilateral trade deal.

The issue figured prominently during a phone conversation between Jaishankar and Rubio that came days after US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs for around 50 countries, including India.

It was the first high-level contact between the two sides after Trump announced the tariffs on April 2.

In a post on X on the phone conversation, Jaishankar said it was agreed on the importance of the early conclusion of the bilateral trade agreement between India and the US.

The external affairs minister (EAM) also said that he and Rubio exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific, the Indian subcontinent, Europe, Middle East and the Caribbean.

"Good to speak with @SecRubio today. Exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific, the Indian subcontinent, Europe, Middle East/West Asia and the Caribbean," he said.

"Agreed on the importance of the early conclusion of the bilateral trade agreement. Look forward to remaining in touch," Jaishankar added.

India and the US are currently holding negotiations on a bilateral trade deal.

Following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump in Washington DC in February, the two sides announced to negotiate the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement by fall 2025.

Last month, US Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch visited India and held talks with his Indian interlocutors on firming up the bilateral trade agreement.

In line with his "America First" policy, Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on its partners and other nations that impose higher levies on imports from the US.

Saying New Delhi imposes high import duties on American goods, the US has announced 26 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India as the Trump administration aims to reduce the country's trade deficit and boost manufacturing.

The 26 per cent duty is over and above the existing duty being faced by Indian goods in the US.

Netanyahu Meets Trump For Tariff, Gaza Talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, becoming the first foreign leader to personally plead for a reprieve from stinging US tariffs that have shaken the world.

Netanyahu and Trump are also set to discuss Gaza, where a short-lived US-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas has collapsed, and growing tensions with Iran.

Trump greeted Netanyahu outside the West Wing and pumped his fist, before the two leaders -- both wearing dark suits, red ties and white shirts -- went inside for a meeting in the Oval Office.

A planned press conference between the two leaders was canceled at short notice without explanation in an unusual move. During his last visit, Netanyahu and Trump both spoke to reporters in the Oval and then held a press conference.

The Israeli premier's visit is his second to Trump since the US president returned to power and comes at short notice -- just days after Trump slapped a 17 percent tariff on Israel in his "Liberation Day" announcement last week.

Trump refused to exempt the top beneficiary of US military aid from his global tariff salvo as he said Washington had a significant trade deficit with Israel.

Netanyahu said on his way to Washington on Sunday that they would discuss "the hostages, achieving victory in Gaza, and of course the tariff regime that has also been imposed on Israel."

"I'm the first international leader, the first foreign leader who will meet with President Trump on a matter so crucial to Israel's economy," he said in a video statement.

"There is a long line of leaders who want to do this. I believe this reflects the special personal relationship and the unique bond between the United States and Israel, which is so vital at this time."

Netanyahu met with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Sunday night soon after his arrival, according to his office.

The Israeli premier also met Trump's special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on Monday.

Trump told reporters on Sunday that "We're going to talk about trade, and we're going to talk about the obvious subject."

"There's a lot of things going on with the Middle East right now that have to be silenced," he added.

Attack on paramedics

Israel's war in Gaza, sparked by Hamas's October 2023 attack, and the fate of the Israeli and US hostages still held in Gaza will be a major subject of discussion.

Israel resumed intense strikes on Gaza on March 18, and the weeks-long ceasefire with Hamas that the United States, Egypt and Qatar had brokered collapsed.

Trump has so far backed Israel to the hilt, accusing Hamas of failing to release the hostages.

The United States has also brushed off an incident in which 15 medics and rescuers were killed by Israeli forces last month in Gaza, sparking international condemnation.

Israel's army chief on Monday ordered a "deeper" investigation into the attack.

France's President Emmanuel Macron said Monday he had organized a call to Trump with the leaders of Egypt and Jordan during a visit to Cairo, with the leaders also calling for an immediate return to the truce.

The leaders also insisted that the Palestinian Authority alone must be in charge of the post-war governance of the Gaza Strip -- rejecting Trump's plan for the US to "own" the enclave after the war.

On Iran, Trump has been pressing for "direct talks" with Tehran on a new deal to curb the Islamic republic's nuclear program.

But Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai said Tehran's proposal for indirect negotiations was "generous, responsible and wise."

There has been widespread speculation that Israel, possibly with US help, might attack Iranian facilities if no agreement is reached.

Netanyahu arrived direct from a visit to Hungary where Prime Minister Viktor Orban pulled his country out of the International Criminal Court (ICC) because the court issued an arrest warrant for the Israeli leader over the Gaza war.

Both leaders also spoke by phone with Trump on Thursday.

Market Panic Deepens As World Scrambles To Temper Trump Tariffs

Asian markets took a huge plunge Monday as US futures pointed to significant losses on Wall Street over Donald Trump's punishing tariffs, even as countries sought compromise with the defiant president.

Trump denied Sunday he was intentionally engineering a selloff and insisted he could not foresee market reactions, saying he would not make a deal with other countries unless trade deficits were solved.

"Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something," he said of the market pain that has seen trillions of dollars wiped off the value of US companies since the beginning of his tariff rampage.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he added that he had sought to resolve the issue with world leaders over the weekend, claiming "they're dying to make a deal."

China retaliated against the United States on Friday, announcing it would impose tit-for-tat tariffs of 34 percent on all US goods from April 10 after Asian markets closed last week.

With the trade war escalating, stocks in Asia took a heavy hammering when trading resumed.

In early trade on Monday in Japan the Nikkei 225 was off an eye-watering 6.5 percent, while stocks in Taiwan were down almost 10 percent and in Singapore 8.5 percent.

Futures contracts for the New York Stock Exchange's main boards were sharply down Sunday, suggesting more pain for battered Wall Street stocks when markets open Monday, while US oil dropped below $60 a barrel for the first time since April 2021.

'Deals And Alliances'

Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel -- which has been hit with 17 percent tariffs, despite being one of Washington's closest allies -- will fly in for crunch talks with Trump Monday on the levies.

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned in a newspaper op-ed that "the world as we knew it has gone," saying the status quo would increasingly hinge on "deals and alliances."

Trump's staggered deadlines have left space for some countries to negotiate, even as he insisted he would stand firm and his administration warned against any retaliation.

"More than 50 countries have reached out to the president to begin a negotiation," Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, told ABC's This Week on Sunday, citing the US Trade Representative.

Vietnam, a manufacturing powerhouse that counted the US as its biggest export market in the first quarter, has already reached out and requested a delay of at least 45 days to thumping 46 percent tariffs imposed by Trump.

Hassett said countries seeking compromise were doing so "because they understand that they bear a lot of the tariffs," as the administration continues to insist that the duties would not lead to major price rises in the United States.

"I don't think that you're going to see a big effect on the consumer in the US," he said.

'Markets Bloodbath'

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also told NBC's Meet the Press that 50 countries had reached out.

But as for whether Trump will negotiate with them, "I think that's a decision for President Trump," Bessent said.

"At this moment he's created maximum leverage for himself... I think we're going to have to see what the countries offer, and whether it's believable," Bessent said.

Other countries have been "bad actors for a long time, and it's not the kind of thing you can negotiate away in days or weeks," he claimed.

Despite hopes for negotiations to avert the worst economic carnage, in Asia the markets bloodbath continued into the new trading week.

In Saudi Arabia, where the markets were open Sunday, the bourse was down 6.78 percent -- the worst daily loss since the Covid-19 pandemic, according to state media.

Larry Summers, formerly Director of the National Economic Council under president Barack Obama, said "there is a very good chance there's going to be more turbulence in markets the way we saw on Thursday and Friday."

Peter Navarro, Trump's tariff guru, has pushed back against the mounting nervousness and insisted to investors that "you can't lose money unless you sell," promising "the biggest boom in the stock market we've ever seen."

Russia has not been targeted by the latest raft of tariffs, and Hassett cited talks with Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine as the reason for their omission from the hit list.

On Wednesday a White House official suggested the reason for Russia's omission was because trade was negligible thanks to sanctions.

Trump has long insisted that countries around the world that sell products to the United States are in fact ripping Americans off, and he sees tariffs as a means to right that wrong.

"Some day people will realize that Tariffs, for the United States of America, are a very beautiful thing!" Trump wrote on Truth social Sunday.

But many economists have warned that tariffs are passed on to consumers and that they could see price rises at home.

USAID Team Laid Off While In Myanmar Earthquake Zone: Report

Three US aid workers were laid off while in Myanmar helping the rescue and recovery from the country's massive earthquake, a former senior staffer said, as the Trump administration's dismantling of foreign aid affects its disaster response.

After travelling to the Southeast Asian nation, the three officials were told late this week they would be let go, Marcia Wong, a former official at the US Agency for International Development, told Reuters.

"This team is working incredibly hard, focused on getting humanitarian aid to those in need. To get news of your imminent termination - how can that not be demoralising?" said Wong, former deputy administrator of USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, which oversees Washington's disease response efforts overseas.

President Donald Trump's government has pledged at least $9 million to Myanmar after the magnitude-7.7 quake, which has killed more than 3,300. But his administration's massive cuts to USAID have hindered its ability to respond, while China, Russia, India and other nations have rushed in assistance.

The Trump administration has moved to fire nearly all USAID staff in recent weeks, as billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency has slashed funding and dismissed contractors across the federal bureaucracy in what it calls an attack on wasteful spending.

The three USAID workers have been sleeping on the streets in the earthquake zone, Wong said, adding that their terminations would take effect in a few months. Residents have been sleeping outside for fear of aftershocks and further building collapses,

Wong said she is in contact with the remaining USAID staff and that she heard about the terminations after an all-staff meeting on Friday.

Former USAID staff say most of the people who would have coordinated the response have been let go, while third-party implementing partners have lost contracts.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday rejected criticism that Washington was slow to respond to the March 28 earthquake because USAID was dismantled.

Rather, he told reporters in Brussels, Myanmar was not "the easiest place to work", saying the military government does not like the United States and prevents it from operating in the country as it wants to.

The United Nations has said the junta was limiting humanitarian aid.

Rubio said the US would no longer be the world's top humanitarian donor, calling on other wealthy nations to step up in assisting Myanmar.

Dancing Robots, Fraught Consumers Star In China's AI Videos Mocking Tariffs

China's state-run media has taken to the internet with AI-generated videos, featuring dancing robots and fraught consumers, to chide US.President Donald Trump and tariffs they say threaten high inflation and economic distress for Americans.

"'Liberation Day', you promised us the stars. But tariffs killed our cheap Chinese cars," an automated female voice sings in a video on the website of China's CGTN, a state-run English-language broadcaster, over a shot of a woman at a kitchen table staring at an empty fork.

The two-minute, 42-second clip, referring to Trump's use of "Liberation Day" for the day of his tariff announcement, was captioned with a warning: "Track is AI-generated. The debt crisis? 100 percent human-made."

Another video posted on the X.com page of state-run news agency Xinhua, also generated by artificial intelligence, shows a robot named TARIFF that chooses to self-destruct rather than follow its creator's orders for high tariffs that bring "trade wars and unrest".

China has sharply criticised the US tariffs, which have triggered the biggest stock market rout since the pandemic, and retaliated on Friday with import duties and export curbs of its own.

Economists say consumers are likely to see higher prices due to the trade war and that the US economy could enter a downturn, while some US trade partners are putting their own levies on American products - effects that Trump has called a "disturbance".

The CGTN video, which displays lyrics in English and Chinese over images of car factories and humanoid robots dancing in burned-out streets, makes a more dire assessment.

"You taxed each truck, you taxed each tire. Midwest burnin' in your dumpster fire," the automated voice sings.

Trump Extends Extends Deadline For TikTok Sale By 75 Days

President Donald Trump on Friday extended the deadline for TikTok to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the United States, giving his administration 75 more days to find a solution.

"A transaction requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

US Wedges Its Way In, Says "Greenland Does Not Want To Be Part Of Denmark"

As Greenland and Denmark, of which it is a part, have vociferously rejected Donald Trump's "strategic buyout" proposal, Washington has struck back, trying to wedge its way in. In a retort to Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Denmark must accept the fact that Greenland no longer wants to be a part of it.

"Denmark should focus on the fact that Greenlanders do not want to be a part of the country anymore. Greenlanders are going to make a decision," Mr Rubio said at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Greenland's incoming prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen immediately rejected the statement saying Mr Rubio is wrong in saying so. "He is not right that Greenland wants to secede tomorrow," he said. However, he did acknowledge that Greenland wants to attain independence in the long run.

"Greenland does not want to be Danish, but Greenland certainly doesn't want to be American either," he said, defending his country.

Speaking to local TV network TV2, Mr Nielsen said, "We work every day to build a foundation so that we can stand on our own in the future, but we are not there yet. What he (Rubio) says doesn't hold water."

The United States has made Greenland's takeover a top priority and a strategic foreign policy goal - for which it has not ruled out a military offensive either. When Donald Trump first suggested that he wants the US to "buy" Greenland, it was taken as a joke, but over the weeks and months the world understood that there is no humour in it.

Denmark, whose semi-autonomous territory Greenland does not have the diplomatic or military might to stand up to the US, has come to its rescue. But they too are feeling the pressure. Danish PM Mette Frederiksen today accused the US of subjecting Denmark and Greenland to immense "pressure and threats".

She firmly rejected US' attempts to annex Greenland, citing international law.

"You cannot annex other countries - not even under the pretext of international security," Prime Minister Frederiksen said at a press conference with top Greenlandic officials in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. "National borders, sovereignty, territorial integrity - these are rooted in international law. These principles were established after World War II so that small countries would not have to fear large ones."

"When you seek to take over part of the Kingdom (of Denmark)'s territory, when we are subjected to pressure and threats by our closest ally, what are we to think about the country we have admired for so many years?" Prime Minister Frederiksen questioned.

Both Denmark and Greenland have, for long, been close allies of the United States. The US also has a strategic military and nuclear missile base in Greenland. But President Trump's threats of annexing the arctic island rich in natural and mineral resources, has led to widespread anti-US sentiment and resentment against the Trump Administration.

Last month, Greenlanders held the largest-ever protests in the island's history against the US. Just hours ahead of a visit by US Vice President JD Vance last month, Greenland announced the formation of a new autonomous government. Four political parties, representing 23 of the 31 seats in Greenland's Parliament, signed a historic coalition agreement to establish the new government. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, chairman of the Demokraatit (Democratic Party), will serve as prime minister.

Russian Missile Strike Kills 12 In Ukrainian President Zelensky's Home City

A Russian ballistic missile strike on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's home city of Kryvyi Rig killed 12 people on Friday, including three children, authorities said.

Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the city's military administration, said more than 50 people were wounded in the evening attack.

"Twelve people were killed in Kryvyi Rig," regional governor Sergiy Lysak said on Telegram.

He added later that this included "three children".

"The number of wounded is constantly increasing. This information will come later. A car and garages are on fire," he said.

Unverified video on social media taken from a distance showed a plume of smoke rising into the evening sky.

Kryvyi Rig, in Ukraine's central Dnipropetrovsk region, is about 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the front line but has regularly been targeted by Russian drones and missiles.

A Russian ballistic attack on the city on Wednesday killed at least four people and wounded more than a dozen others.

The strikes come as US President Donald Trump's administration pushes for a speedy end to the more than three-year war, holding talks with both Russia and Ukraine.

Moscow has rejected a joint US-Ukrainian proposal for an unconditional and full ceasefire, while Ukraine has accused Russia of dragging out talks with no intention of halting its offensive.

A 25-Hour Speech, Penguin Tariffs And Golden Visas: A Week In 'Trumpworld'

The first week of April was always going to be a big one for Donald Trump with his much-hyped announcement on global tariffs -- but that was just one part of another frenetic seven days at the White House.

Tariffs and penguin memes

Unveiling the new tariffs in the White House garden, Donald Trump held up a table of figures that the world strained to read.

Alongside China, India and EU were unexpected names such as the Heard and McDonald Islands, a barren sub-Antarctic Australian territory inhabited by penguins but no humans.

One widely shared meme image showed a penguin in place of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office during his recent spat with the US president and Vice President JD Vance.

Trump-branded golden visa

Donald Trump unveiled the first "gold card," a residency permit to be sold for $5 million each to attract investors and employers to the United States.

Flying on Air Force One, he showed off a prototype that bore his face and an inscription "The Trump Card" and said the special visa would be available with weeks. "Pretty exciting, huh?" he added.

The president has suggested revenue from the visa could be used to reduce the US national deficit, and that one million cards may be for sale.

A 25-hour anti-Trump speech

A Democratic lawmaker shattered the record for the longest speech in Senate history, staying on his feet for 25 hours and 5 minutes to deliver a fiery, if long-winded, protest against Donald Trump.

Senator Cory Booker's endurance -- to hold the floor he had to remain standing and could not even go to the bathroom -- beat Strom Thurmond, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

"This is a moral moment. It's not left or right. It's right or wrong," Booker said as he wrapped up, adding "I'm going to deal with some of the biological urgencies I'm feeling."

Musk to return to the day job?

Elon Musk made a failed effort -- including cash giveaways and personal appearances -- to swing a vote to choose a Wisconsin Supreme Court judge.

Elon Musk has led Donald Trump's efforts to slash federal government, but his days of taking a starring role at cabinet meetings were reported to soon be over as he is set to return to Tesla, SpaceX and his many other interests.

Factors in play could be Tesla's slumping sales, friction with other Trump officials and his rather public setback in Wisconsin.

'Free Le Pen' says Trump

Donald Trump rallied to defend French far-right leader Marine Le Pen after she was found guilty of embezzlement and banned from running for public office for five years.

She had been seen as a leading candidate in the 2027 presidential election "and now, just before what would be a Big Victory, they get her on a minor charge," Donald Trump said.

"It is all so bad for France, and the Great French People, no matter what side they are on. FREE MARINE LE PEN!"

India To Send Buddha Relics Discovered In Gujarat To Thailand For Exposition

India will soon send relics of the Buddha, discovered in Devni Mori in northern Gujarat, to Thailand for an exposition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this after bilateral talks with Thailand Prime Minister Paentongtran Shinawatra at the Government House here.

"I am extremely happy to announce that the Holy Relics found in Aravali, Gujarat in 1960 will also be sent to Thailand for an exposition," Modi said after he received a copy of the 108 volumes of Tipitaka, the revered collection of Buddhist scriptures, in Pali language, from Paetongtarn.

The Prime Minister noted that the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha were sent from India to Thailand last year.

"It is a matter of great pleasure that more than four million devotees got the opportunity to pay their tributes," he said.

The Devni Mori relics were found during excavations at the mound known as 'Bhoja Raja No Terkro' or the courtyard of King Bhoja in 1960.

The dig suggested this was the location of a Mahastupa - the big stupa surrounded by monasteries or viharas buried in the adjoining fields.

The stupa was 37 feet high with a base rammed with pebbles, brickbats, kankar and yellow silt.

The excavators found a casket made of green schist, with inscriptions on the body and lid, at the lowest level of the stupa.

Inside the stone casket was a copper box which contained the sacred relics of Buddha. The inscription on the casket mentions Buddha as 'Dashaballa'.

Trump Tariffs Could Cause Global Trade Drop By 1% In 2025 Warns WTO

US President Donald Trump's worldwide tariff salvo could lead to an overall contraction of around 1 percent in global merchandise trade volumes this year, the WTO chief warned Thursday.

After Trump on Wednesday unveiled a blitz of harsher-than-expected levies aimed at countries around the globe, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala warned the measures would "have substantial implications for global trade and economic growth prospects".

Trump slapped 10 percent import duties on all nations and far higher levies on imports from dozens of specific countries -- including top trade partners China and the European Union -- adding to tariffs already imposed since his return to power in January.

"While the situation is rapidly evolving, our initial estimates suggest that these measures, coupled with those introduced since the beginning of the year, could lead to an overall contraction of around 1 percent in global merchandise trade volumes this year," the World Trade Organization director-general said in a statement.

This, she said, would represent a drop of nearly four percentage points from the WTO's previous projection.

Okonjo-Iweala urged WTO members to manage the tensions resulting the US measures responsibly.

"I'm deeply concerned about this decline and the potential for escalation into a tariff war with a cycle of retaliatory measures that lead to further declines in trade."

Okonjo-Iweala stressed that despite the US measures "the vast majority of global trade" still flows under WTO's so-called Most-favoured-nation (MFN) status, which bars countries from discriminating between their trading partners.

"Our estimates now indicate that this share currently stands at 74 percent, down from around 80 percent at the beginning of the year," she said.

"WTO members must stand together to safeguard these gains."

Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the fact that "the WTO was established to serve precisely in moments like this - as a platform for dialogue, to prevent trade conflicts from escalating, and to support an open and predictable trading environment".

"It's Liberation Day In America," Posts Trump Ahead Of Tariffs Announcement

US President Donald Trump geared up to unveil sweeping new "Liberation Day" tariffs on Wednesday in a move that threatens to ignite a devastating global trade war.

Key US trading partners including the European Union and Britain said they were preparing their responses to Trump's escalation, as nervous markets fell in Europe and America.

Trump will unveil the levies in a grand ceremony with his cabinet members in the White House Rose Garden -- just as Wall Street stocks close at 4:00 pm (2000 GMT).

"IT'S LIBERATION DAY IN AMERICA!" Trump posted a one-liner on his Truth Social platform early Wednesday.

The 78-year-old has promised so-called reciprocal tariffs on friends and foes alike if they target the world's largest economy, saying the levies will stop the United States being "ripped off."

But Trump has kept the world guessing until the last minute about the scale and scope, with the White House saying he was still "perfecting" them with just hours to go.

Reports say he could either hit countries with tit-for-tat tariffs, impose blanket 20 percent tariffs -- or, more probably, give some countries preferential treatment depending on their deficits.

The Republican president said in his last public appearance Monday that he would be "very kind" but gave little away.

- 'Tug-of-war' -

Critics say US businesses and consumers could bear the burden if importers pass on the cost, adding that the policy could increase risks of a recession.

"If this trade war continues through Labor Day (on September 1), the US economy will likely suffer a recession this year," Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics, told AFP.

Trump's long-awaited announcement is also causing global turmoil, with stock markets jittery for days and countries in the crosshairs scrambling to decide how to react.

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned Wednesday that whatever steps other countries take "it will be negative anyway the world over."

America's neighbors Mexico and Canada, whose economies are closely linked with the United States, are those that could suffer the most from a bruising trade war.

"I understand that it's a game of tug-of-war," truck driver Alejandro Espinoza told AFP as he waited in a queue to cross the Mexican-US border. "But unfortunately, we're the ones who pay in the end."

Major economies have however vowed retribution

The European Union will react to new Trump tariffs "before the end of April," said a French government spokeswoman.

The 27-nation bloc's initial salvo would counter US actions on steel and aluminum, followed by sector-by-sector measures.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has made intense but so far fruitless efforts to win a carve-out from Trump, said a "trade war is in nobody's interests."

"We have prepared for all eventualities -- and we will rule nothing out," he told parliament.

- 'Rebirth' -

Germany warned Wednesday that trade wars hurt "both sides."

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney, who goes into elections later this month dominated by tensions with Trump, said his country would be "very deliberate" in its response.

The White House said Trump's tariffs would come into effect "immediately" after Wednesday's announcement, effectively ruling out delays for negotiations.

Sweeping auto tariffs of 25 percent are due to take effect April 3, after Trump earlier imposed duties on steel and aluminum imports and goods from China.

But Trump has wobbled on several other tariff announcements since returning to office in January, blinking at the last minute with allies such as Canada and Mexico.

The billionaire has had a long love affair with tariffs, insisting in the face of experts that they are a cure-all for America's trade imbalances and economic ills.

Trump insists the levies will bring a "rebirth" of America's hollowed-out manufacturing capacity, and says companies can avoid tariffs by moving to the United States.

The tariffs meanwhile underscore the growing and profound gulf between Trump's America and many of its closest allies, not only on trade but on security, defense and almost everything else.

Live: Trump To Announce "Liberation Day" Tariffs, How Will They Affect India?

US Tariff Announcement Live Updates: US President Donald Trump is set to impose sweeping new  "Liberation Day" tariffs on Wednesday, a move that could spark a global trade war.

The 78-year-old President will unveil the measures and plans in the Rose Garden of the White House at 4pm EST (1.30am IST) and the new duties would take effect immediately. A separate 25% global tariff on auto imports is scheduled to take effect on April 3.

According to think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), the new tariffs could significantly impact Indian exports. A uniform tariff could leave India facing an additional tax of 4.9% compared to the current 2.8%, impacting sectors like agriculture, electronics, and pharmaceuticals, according to the GTRI's "Reciprocal Tariffs and India" report.

Early Wednesday, Mr Trump posted a one-liner on his Truth Social platform: "It's Liberation Day in America!"

Mr Trump for weeks has said his reciprocal tariff plans are a move to equalise generally lower US tariff rates with those charged by other countries and counteract their non-tariff barriers that disadvantage US exports. Global markets have been jittery for days ahead of the announcement, while countries most likely in the crosshairs have called for talks - even as they ready retaliatory measures.

Here are the Live Updates on US President Donald Trump's announcement on tariffs:

As India-China Ties Turn 75, New Delhi Reminds Beijing Of "Lessons" Learnt

  1. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was the chief guest at the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi, which organised an event to celebrate 75 years of establishing India-China ties. Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong and the Indian Foreign Secretary cut a cake on the occasion before speaking about the relations between the two Asian giants.
  2. In his nearly seven-minute speech, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the "lessons" for both nations to keep in mind in order to foster stronger ties. He began his speech by saying, "Even tough, as modern nation states, we have had only 75 years of formal ties, India and China have shared cultural and civilizational ties and people-to-people contacts going back millenia."
  3. He spoke about significant "contributions by personalities such as Bodhidharma, Kumarajiva, Xuanzang, and Rabindranath Tagore," towards fostering historical India-China relations. He added that "Our two civilizations have, each in their own unique way, played a significant role in shaping human history. This holds a lesson for contemporary ties."
  4. Speaking about the second lesson, Mr Misri said, "In the last few years, India-China relations have gone through a difficult phase. But largely, due to the guidance by our leaders, and untiring efforts by the political leadership, military leaders, and diplomatic colleagues, who maintained communications throughout this time, our two countries have resolved several issues along the border areas. This too, holds a lesson for us (China and India) - which is that peace and tranquility in the border areas is critical for the smooth development of our overall bilateral relations."
  5. He went on to say that "It is on the basis of this fundamental understanding, which was shared in the meeting between PM Modi and President Xi Jinping in Russia, that both nations are now working together to chart a roadmap for our bilateral relations, to return to a stable, predictable, and amicable path."
  6. Sharing specifics about the efforts made at the political, military, and diplomatic levels, the foreign secretary highlighted that "In the last 5 months, we have had two meetings between the foreign ministers - in November, 2024 and February 2025. Our Special Representatives (SRs) for the India-China boundary question met in Beijing in December, 2024 for the 23rd round of SR-level talks. After a gap of nearly five years, our Defence Minister met with his Chinese counterpart in November, 2024, and I (foreign secretary) had the opportunity to visit Beijing in January, 2025 and had a very productive meeting with my counterpart."
  7. India and China, he said, have decided to take several steps to "resume practical cooperation between our two countries. Amongst the first of these, is the resumption of the Kailash-Mansarovar yatra this year," he said, adding that "We are also discussing the resumption of cooperation on transport and rivers, and on direct air services."
  8. He noted that these steps are important and foremost in order to restore mutual trust between the two nations and enhance people-to-people ties. Highlighting the responsibility that the two major economies must live up to, Mr Misri said, "As two large neighbours in an important part of the world, a stable bilateral relationship between our nations will contribute to humanity as a whole. Let us take this 75th year milestone as an opportunity to rebuild our ties."
  9. Before concluding his speech, the foreign secretary spoke about the "third lesson" for both nations to keep in mind. "The durable basis for rebuilding our ties is the three-fold formula of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest."
  10. In his closing remarks, the foreign secretary acknowledged that "The path forward may be a difficult one, but one that we are prepared for", adding that "It is on the basis of these steps that we have already taken in the last five months, that we have seen promising beginnings" at the end of seven-and-a-half decades. This, he said, should now be "turned into tangible benefit" for the people of our two countries.

All Local Workers, US Diplomats To Be Fired From USAID: Report

Elon Musk's cost-cutting team is finalizing the dismantlement of the US Agency for International Development, ordering the firings of thousands of local workers and American diplomats and civil servants assigned to the agency overseas, two former top USAID officials and a source with knowledge of the situation said on Tuesday.

On Friday, Congress was notified that almost all of USAID's own employees are being fired by September, all of its overseas offices shut, and some functions absorbed into the State Department.

The latest move by Musk's Department of Government Efficiency effectively will eliminate what is left of the agency's workforce.

"This is definitely the final closing out," said one of the former senior USAID officials.

US President Donald Trump and Musk in February began the process of shuttering USAID and merging its operations into the State Department to ensure they conformed with Trump's "America First" policies. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The former officials and source familiar with the situation said on condition of anonymity that USAID's human resources office told regional bureaus in a conference call that layoff notices were going to all of the more than 10,000 locally-hired foreign nationals, effective in August.

Notices also will be sent to US diplomats and civil servants assigned to work abroad for what has been the leading US foreign aid provider for more than 60 years, they said.

Trump has claimed without evidence that the agency was rife with fraud and run by "radical left lunatics," while Musk falsely accused it of being a "criminal" organization.

Thousands of USAID's own staff were placed on administrative leave - they received layoff notices on Friday - hundreds of contractors fired and more than 5,000 programs terminated, disrupting global humanitarian aid efforts on which millions depend.

According to the non-partisan Congressional Research Service, USAID maintains missions in more than 60 countries, with most of its funds going to humanitarian aid and health programs.

Top recipients included war-torn Ukraine and Democratic Republic of Congo, US ally Jordan, and the Israeli-occupied West Bank and the combat-shattered Gaza Strip.

A summary of the conference call circulated by one regional bureau and reviewed by Reuters confirmed the terminations of all locally-hired foreign nationals and American diplomats and civil servants on assignment with USAID abroad.

It said more than 600 US diplomats are on secondment to USAID overseas, but provided no figure for the number of US civil service members. Most are to be terminated in July, when the intent is to close "all programmatic work."

"Every position eliminated; 100 percent of the agency is rif'd (Reduction in Force) or will be," the summary said, and advised personnel that no one would be retained and to "focus on things to make sure you're getting the right benefits."

US Admits To El Salvador Deportation "Error" As Alarm Deepens Over Policy

Donald Trump's hardline immigrant policy faced fresh scrutiny Tuesday after officials admitted an "administrative error" in the hurried deportation process had sent a man to a notorious El Salvador prison.

The president's administration is pursuing a sweeping drive against migrants -- a key campaign promise -- touting the move as a crackdown on gang members and other violent criminals.

But mounting claims that a number of individuals have flimsy or no connection to organized crime has prompted anger among rights groups, Democrats and even some Trump allies, including the influential podcaster Joe Rogan.

A court filing Monday said a Salvadoran man was living in the United States under protected legal status until he was flown to El Salvador with hundreds of other alleged gang members earlier this month.

Abrego Garcia was accused of being a gang member in 2019 but not convicted of any crime, and a judge ordered he should not be deported because he could be harmed in El Salvador.

In Monday's court filing, government lawyers admitted he had been deported in March in an "administrative error," adding that US courts did not now have jurisdiction to secure his release.

A separate reported case of a gay barber being deported has attracted US media attention, and attorneys for several deportees say their clients were targeted only because of their tattoos.

Rogan said Saturday it was "horrific" that innocent people could be swept up in the push to deport gang members.

"You got to get scared that people who are not criminals are getting lassoed up and deported and sent to El Salvador prisons," he said.

"Let's get the gang members out. Everybody agrees. But let's not (see) innocent gay hairdressers get lumped up with the gangs."

Vice President JD Vance on social media claimed that Garcia was a member of violent Salvadoran criminal gang MS-13.

"The media has determined the real victims are the gang members we're trying to get out of the country," he said.
